Privacy Policy
Safe Outside (Last updated: [25/08/2026])
1. Introduction
Safe Outside makes wearable and carryable accessories for children that contain an embedded Near Field Communication (NFC) tag ("the Product"). When the NFC tag is scanned by a compatible smartphone or device, it opens a unique, individually-assigned web page ("the Profile Page") that can display information supplied by the child's parent or legal guardian, which may include emergency contact details and medical information, for use in the event the child is found, lost, injured, or otherwise requires assistance.
Because the Profile Page can contain a child's personal data and health information, we have written this Privacy Policy to explain clearly what we collect, why, how it is protected, who can see it, and what rights the account holder (almost always a parent or guardian, referred to below as "you" or "the Account Holder") has over that data.
This Product is intended to be purchased and configured by an adult parent or legal guardian on behalf of a child. It is not intended for children to create or manage their own account.
2. Scope of This Policy
This Policy covers:
-
The website(s) and app(s) used to set up, manage, and view a Product's Profile Page (the "Services").
-
Data collected when you purchase the Product, register it, and create or edit a Profile Page.
-
Data collected automatically when someone scans the NFC tag and views a Profile Page.
This Policy does not cover third-party sites you may link to from a Profile Page, or third-party platforms (e.g., app stores, payment processors) that have their own privacy policies.
3. Information We Collect
3.1 Information You Provide as the Account Holder
-
Account information: your name, email address, phone number, password, and billing/shipping address.
-
Child information: first name (or nickname), age or date of birth, photo (optional), and any identifying details you choose to add (e.g., "non-verbal," "allergic to bee stings").
-
Emergency contact information: names, phone numbers, and relationship of emergency contacts you choose to list.
-
Medical information (special category / sensitive data): any medical, health, or disability-related information you voluntarily choose to add to the Profile Page, which may include allergies, medical conditions, medications, blood type, physician contact details, or instructions for first responders.
-
Payment information: processed by our third-party payment processor; we do not store full card numbers on our servers.
You control what appears on the Profile Page. You are not required to include medical or health information, and you may add, edit, or remove it at any time. Please only include information you are comfortable being viewed by anyone who scans the tag, subject to the access controls described in Section 5.
3.2 Information Collected Automatically
-
Device/scan data: when the NFC tag is scanned, our servers may log the date, time, approximate location (if location services are permitted by the scanning device), device/browser type, and IP address of the person viewing the Profile Page.
-
Cookies and similar technologies: used on the Services for functionality, security, and (if applicable) analytics. See Section 9.
3.3 Information From Other Sources
-
Customer support communications (emails, chat logs, phone notes).
-
Information from resellers or retailers if the Product was registered through them.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information described above to:
-
Set up and host the unique Profile Page linked to your Product's NFC tag.
-
Allow the Profile Page to display the emergency and/or medical information you have chosen to include, to whoever scans the tag (subject to any access controls you configure).
-
Operate, maintain, and secure the Services (account authentication, fraud prevention, abuse prevention).
-
Communicate with you about your order, account, or safety-relevant updates (e.g., "your Profile Page was edited").
-
Provide customer support.
-
Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
-
With your separate, opt-in consent only: send marketing communications, or use aggregated/de-identified data for product improvement or analytics.
We do not use children's personal data or medical information for advertising, profiling, or to sell to third parties.
5. Who Can See the Profile Page
-
The Profile Page is reachable only via a unique link or code embedded in the specific NFC tag (and, if enabled, a QR code/URL printed as a backup). It is not indexed by search engines and is not publicly listed.
-
You choose what information appears on the page and can configure it to show:
-
Full information to anyone who scans it, or
-
Limited information (e.g., "this child has a medical condition — call [emergency contact]") to anonymous scanners, with fuller medical detail unlocked only after a PIN, verification step, or similar access control, if we offer that feature.
-
-
Because the underlying purpose of the Product is to help a stranger, caregiver, or first responder assist your child quickly, some information will generally need to be visible without a login. You should assume that anyone who scans the tag and reaches the link may see whatever fields you have marked as visible.
-
We do not share the Profile Page content with data brokers, advertisers, or other parents, and we do not make Profile Pages browsable or searchable.
6. How We Share Information
We do not sell personal data, and we do not sell children's data, ever.
We may share information only with:
-
Service providers / processors who host our infrastructure, process payments, send emails/SMS, or provide customer support (bound by contract to use the data only to provide services to us.)
-
Law enforcement or emergency services, if reasonably necessary to protect the safety of a child or others, or to respond to a legal request such as a subpoena or court order.
-
A successor entity, if we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (you will be notified and given the opportunity to delete your data first, where required by law.)
7. Children's Privacy
This Product is designed to be set up and controlled by a parent or legal guardian, not by the child.
-
We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children without verifiable parental consent.
-
All child-related data on a Profile Page is entered by the Account Holder (an adult), who confirms they are the child's parent or legal guardian (or have authorization to act on the child's behalf) when creating the account.
-
Parents/guardians can review, edit, or delete their child's information on the Profile Page at any time by logging into their account, and can delete the Profile Page and all associated data entirely (see Section 10).
-
If we learn that a child has independently submitted personal information to us without parental involvement, we will delete it promptly.
8. Medical / Health Information (Special Category Data)
We recognize that medical and health-related information is highly sensitive.
-
Providing medical information on a Profile Page is always optional and is added at your discretion.
-
We treat this data as "special category data" (GDPR) / "sensitive personal information" (CCPA/CPRA and similar state laws) and apply additional safeguards, including encryption in transit and at rest, and restricted internal access on a need-to-know basis.
-
We do not use medical information for any purpose other than displaying it on the Profile Page as you configure it, and operating/securing the Services.
-
We do not use medical information for advertising or share it with advertisers.
9. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We use strictly necessary cookies to operate login, security, and core site functionality. [If applicable: We also use analytics cookies to understand aggregate usage of our website, and you can control non-essential cookies through our cookie banner / your browser settings.] We do not use tracking technologies to build advertising profiles of children.
10. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
-
Access the personal data we hold about you and your child's Profile Page.
-
Correct inaccurate data.
-
Delete your account, your child's Profile Page, and associated data ("right to erasure").
-
Restrict or object to certain processing.
-
Data portability — receive your data in a portable format.
-
Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent (e.g., marketing emails), without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.
-
Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 14, or use the account controls in the app/website. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law (e.g., 30 days under GDPR, 45 days under CCPA/CPRA).
Deleting your account will deactivate the Profile Page — the NFC tag will then either show no information or a generic "this tag is not registered" message, rather than being reassigned without your consent.
11. Data Retention
We retain personal data, including child and medical information, for as long as your account or Product registration is active, plus a limited period afterward to comply with legal, tax, or security obligations, or to resolve disputes. You can request earlier deletion at any time (Section 10). Scan/log data (Section 3.2) is retained for a shorter period, typically 5 months, for security and abuse-prevention purposes, unless a longer period is required by law.
12. Data Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect personal data, including encryption of data in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and encryption of sensitive fields at rest, access controls limiting who at our company can view medical/child data, and regular security review of our systems. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we will notify affected users and regulators as required by applicable breach-notification laws in the event of a security incident affecting personal data.
